History

Hong Kong Marine Contractors Limited has a traceable record of shore-end submarine cable installation and maintenance works, which can be dated back to the early 70's.

Hong Kong Underwater Services, the predecessor of Hong Kong Marine Contractors Limited, was established by Mr. Cliff Chan in year 1969 to provide diving services for the marine construction industry in Hong Kong.

Within its first year of operation, the company was awarded the diving subcontract in construction of the first Hong Kong Cross Harbor Tunnel. Subsequently, the company also completed similar subcontract works for the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railways Submerged Tunnel.

Following the completion of the subcontract works and recognizing of its own abilities; in 1973 the company turned its business focus to submarine cable installation and maintenance works.

By that time, submarine cables were frequently damaged by the busy marine activities in Hong Kong harbor. In view of this, the company invented its own burial sled to bury submarine cables under seabed.

The company was the pioneer to apply the lay and burial method to install submarine cable in Hong Kong. In year 1976, the first telephone cable between Shatin and Ma On Shan was successfully installed and buried 1.0m below the seabed by our burial machine.

After the successful completion of the first telephone line, many miles of telecommunications and power cables had been installed between the peninsulas and the islands in Hong Kong and South East Asia Regions. In 1980, Hong Kong Marine Contractors Limited was established to provide services for the rapidly growing submarine cable installation and maintenance industry.

As our burial techniques and technologies are constantly improving, we are able to install and bury high voltage power cables and optical fiber cables to a depth of 10.0m below the seabed.
